Kurye Video Bienal Özel Gösterimleri
Kurye Video Organizasyonu, İMÇ 5533’te açılan Kurye Video Arşivini kutlamak ve İstanbul Bienali vesilesiyle canlanan İstanbul’un kültür-sanat hayatına katkıda bulunmak amacıyla Ekim ayının ilk on beş gününde özel gösterimler düzenliyor. Çarşamba, Perşembe, Cuma ve Cumartesi günleri saat 13:30 ve 16:00 olmak üzere iki seans halinde İMÇ 5533’te gerçekleşecek video gösterimlerine tüm video meraklılarını bekliyoruz!
1-15 Ekim arasında gerçekleşecek bu gösterimler 47 ülkeden 270 sanatçının 700’ü aşkın videosuna ev sahipliği yapan ve koleksiyonunu gün be gün geliştiren Kurye Video Arşivinden İstanbul Bienalinin bu seneki temasına paralellik gösterecek şekilde seçilmiş videolardan oluşuyor. Bertolt Brecht’in 1928’de Büyük Buhran eşiğinde sorduğu ve İstanbul Bienalinin 2009’da küresel bir iktisadi bunalımın ortasında yinelediği “insan neyle yaşar?” sorusuna cevap arayan videolardan oluşan program, bu soruya verilebilecek üç olası cevap çerçevesinde şekillendi: aşk, nefret ve elbette para.
Bireysel hayatlarımız kadar medeniyetlerin de itici gücü olduğu iddia edilebilecek iki temel duygu, aşk ve nefret, “insan neyle yaşar?” sorusuna cevap arayan iki seçkinin konularını oluşturuyor. Bu seçkiler aşk ve nefrete ilk anda akla gelenden daha geniş bir çerçevede yaklaşıyor. Mesela aşk seçkisi içine tutkuyu ve aşkın sosyal etkilerle aldığı farklı şekilleri ve içine sıkıştığı kültürel ve kurumsal düzenlemeleri de alırken nefret seçkisi şiddet, savaş gibi nefretin fiziksel dışavurumlarının yanı sıra tiksinti ve dışlama gibi gündelik zulümlere de yer veriyor. Üçüncü ve son seçkinin konusu ise Bertolt Brecht’in sorduğu soruya onun beklediği cevabı veriyor: Para. Kapitalist dünyada para olmadan insanlık olmaz. Ahlak her zaman karın tokluğundan sonra gelir. Para başlıklı seçkinin videoları paranın ve içinde yaşadığımız küresel kapitalist dünyada her şeyin ve herkesin metalaşmasının gündelik hayatımızdaki izlerini sürüyor.

Kurye Video Biennial Special Screenings
Kurye Video Organization will present special screenings throughout the first 15 days of October in order to celebrate the opening of the permanent Kurye Video Archive at İMÇ 5533 and to contribute to the art and culture scene in Istanbul which has been recently invigorated by the onset of the Istanbul Biennial. We invite all video enthusiasts to our screenings which will take place twice at 13:30 and 16:00 every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday until October 15 at İMÇ 5533!
The screenings will comprise videos chosen from Kurye Video Archive, currently housing more than 700 videos by 270 artists coming from 47 countries and enlarging its collection by the day, in parallel to the theme of this year’s edition of the Istanbul Biennial. Seeking to find viable answers to the famous question “what keeps mankind alive?” posed first in 1928 at the eve of the Great Depression by Bertolt Brecht and again by the curatorial team of the Istanbul Biennial in 2009 at the midst of the global financial crisis, the screening program was formed around three possible answers to this essential question: love, hate and of course money.
Two essential human emotions, love an hate, which could arguably be the most important driving forces behind not only personal life stories but also civilizations, provide two separate answers to the question “what keeps mankind alive?” as well as the themes of two separate screening programs. These screenings approach the notions of love and hate more broadly than what first comes to mind. For instance, the screening on love also includes videos on passion and the different shapes that love can take in the face of social influences as well as the institutional and cultural limitations that constrain love; while the screening on hate includes not only the most common physical manifestations of hate like acts of violence and war but also more minute and everyday acts of hatred like repulsion and ostracism. The theme of the last screening provides Brecht with the answer he originally intended to provoke: Money. In the capitalist world, there can be no room for humanity without money. And morality always comes second to the necessity of being able to afford a full stomach. The videos of the screening on money trace the role of money in our everyday life as well as the commodification of everything and everyone in our global capitalist world.

Sergi: Bir Varmış Bir Yokmuş, 9 Eylül - 29 Ekim (Pazar, Pazartesi, Salı hariç her gün 13:00/18:00 arası
Bilginin aktarılması söz konusu olduğunda, bunda hafızanın bir rolü olsa da olmasa da, elde edilen sonuç, ister sözlü ister görsel ya da bu ikisinin bir birleşimi olsun, anlatımsal olacaktır. İstanbul gibi karmaşık ve kaotik bir şehirde, öykü anlatımı, mekânın doğal dokusunun bir parçası olarak var olmaktadır. Bir Varmış Bir Yokmuş isimli bu enstalâsyonda, Volkan Aslan ve Nancy Atakan, İstanbul’da ve küratör Marcus Graf ile birlikte işlettikleri bağımsız sanat mekânı 5533'ün çevresinde yer alan Unkapanı bölgesinde bulunan gerçekliğin/kurgunun çoklu katmanlarını yansıtan hayali ve tarihsel bir mekân sunmaktadır. Bu iki sanatçı, yerel üniversite öğrencileriyle birlikte, 5533’ün açıldığı yıl olan 2008’den beri, 5533’ün, küçük işletmelere sahip iş adamlarından oluşan komşularının ve İstanbul’daki benzer inisiyatif ve merkezlerin sahip olduğu komşuların, çağdaş sanata ilişkin bakış açılarını ve algılamalarını saptamaya yönelik çok sayıda proje organize etmişlerdir. Buna ek olarak, 5533’ün de içinde bulunduğu ve İstanbul’un en eski alışveriş merkezi olan İMÇ’nin (İstanbul Manifaturacılar Çarşısı) mimari tarihini de araştırmışlardır. Psödo-belgesel tarzındaki bu yaklaşım, belirli bir anlatım türünü kullanmaktadır ve gerçekleştirilecek bu etkinliğin tartışma paneli kısmında sunulacaktır. Buna karşılık, Volkan Aslan ve Nancy Atakan’ın enstalâsyonu, içinde yaşanılan dünyalara ilişkin öyküleri anlatmanın alternatif yollarını göstermektedir.
5533’ün etrafında yer alan çevre, geleneksel, Müslüman ve tarihi öğeleri, modern yaşamın izleriyle bir araya getirmekte ve paralel dünyaların, yan yana var olmanın yanı sıra birbirleriyle kesişmelerini ve birbirlerinin içine nüfuz etmelerini de mümkün kılmaktadır. Pleksiglas, neon, plastik, cam, reklâmlar, videolar ve çağdaş müzik, Müslüman kadınların geleneksel hazır giyim eşyaları, yerel bir çay ocağı, yarı terkedilmiş bir modern alışveriş merkezi, solmuş fotoğraflar, arabesk müzik ve atılmış nesnelerle iç içe geçmektedir. Aslan ve Atakan’ın enstalâsyonu, her ikisinin de kişisel sanat uygulamalarını kullanarak bu atmosferi dolaylı olarak yeniden yaratmaktadır. Nancy Atakan, 5533’ün de içinde bulunduğu bu alışveriş merkezini kuran akrabalarının öyküleri, aile fotoğrafları ve kişisel deneyimlerinden yola çıkarken, Volkan Aslan’ın anlatımı, geçmiş dönemlere ait bulunmuş nesnelerden yararlanmaktadır. Her iki sanatçı da, nesnelerin, insanlardan daha uzun ömürlü olduklarının ve geriye kalan şeylerin atmosferini yansıttıklarının, kokusunu taşıdıklarının ve arkalarında izler bıraktıklarının bilincindedir. Nesneler, hafızayı taşımakta ve belgelemektedir. Bu nesneler, sanatçının ister tanıdığı ister tanımadığı bir kimseden geliyor olsunlar, etkinlikler, kişiler ve dönemler hakkında öyküler anlatmaktadırlar. Bu nesnelerinden çıkan hikayeler hiçbiri, birbirinden daha doğru değildir.

Kurye Video Organizasyonu, sadece video üzerine faaliyet gösteren bağımsız ve uluslararası bir organizasyondur. Arşiv sistemiyle işleyen Kurye Video Organizasyonu, aynı zamanda yerel ve uluslararası alanda ajans olarak da çalışmaktadır. Arşivinde hali hazırda 47 ülkeden 267 sanatçıya ait 700’ü aşkın video bulunan organizasyon, geçtiğimiz 4 yıl içerisinde dört uluslararası video festivalinin yanı sıra sayısız sergi, özel gösterim ve görsel-işitsel etkinliğe imza atmıştır. Sayısı gün geçtikçe artan videolarıyla uluslararası sanat camiasındaki yerini giderek sağlamlaştıran ve Türkiye için önemli bir kaynak teşkil eden arşiv bundan böyle İMÇ5533 mekanından takip edilebilecek ve organizasyon bienal süresince düzenli olarak video gösterimleri gerçekleştirecek. İzleyiciler gösterim olmayan günlerde arşivden videolar izleyebileceği gibi, bugüne kadar yapılmış gösterimleri de istedikleri zaman seyretme özgürlüğüne sahip olacaklar.

Whenever memory plays a role in relating information, the outcome, whether verbal, visual, or a combination of the two, becomes narrative. In a complex chaotic city like Istanbul, storytelling exists as a part of the natural texture of the place. In this installation entitled, Once Upon a Time/Bir varmış bir yokmuş, Volkan Aslan and Nancy Atakan present an imaginary space, a historical place, that reflects the multi-layers of reality/fiction found in Istanbul as well as the unkapani area around 5533, the non-profit independent art space they run together with the curator, Marcus Graf. Since 5533 opened in 2008, these two artists in conjunction with local university students have conducted several projects organized to ascertain the viewpoints and perspections related to contemporary art of their small businessmen neighbors as well as those of neighbors of similar initiatives and centers throughout the city. In addition, they have researched the architectural history of İMÇ (Istanbul Textile Manufacturers), the oldest Istanbul shopping center in which 5533 is located. This pseudo-documentary type of approach uses one type of narrative and will be presented in the panel discussion portion of this event whereas the installation by Aslan and Atakan shows alternative ways to tell stories about the worlds they inhabit.
The environment around 5533 joins the traditional, Moslem, historical, with touches of contemporary life to allow parallel worlds to stand side by side as well as to overlap and to penetrate each other. Plexiglas, neon, plastic, glass, advertisements, videos, contemporary music intertwine with traditional Moslem women’s readywear, a local tea shop, a semi-deserted modern shopping center, faded photographs, arabesque music, and discarded objects. Aslan and Atakan’s installation indirectly recreates this atmosphere using their individual artistic practices. While Atakan starts from personal experience, family photographs and stories of her relatives who initially established the shopping center in which 5533 exists, Aslan’s narrative begins with found objects from past eras. Both artists realize that objects outlive humans and that objects leave traces, carry smells, and reflect the atmosphere of what remains. Objects document and carry memory. Whether these objects come from someone known or unknown to the artist, they tell stories about events, people, and eras. Neither seems more true than the other.

Kurye Video Organization is an international and independent organization operating solely in the field of video art. It also works as an archive and an agency both locally and internationally. So far, the archive has attracted more than 700 videos by 265 artists coming from 42 countries. The organization has realized numerous exhibitions, special screenings and audio-visual events as well as four international video festivals over the course of the last four years. Augmenting its place and its reputation in the international art scene with an ever increasing number of videos, Kurye archive has become a valuable resource for the art scene in Turkey. This archive will from now on be available at IMC5533 and to celebrate this new space, Kurye will feature regular screenings throughout the duration of the Biennial. The viewers will be able to select and watch individual videos from the archive as they like and will also have the chance to watch Kurye’s previous screening programs.

Istanbul-Off-Spaces exhibition and event in Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien is meant to draw attention to a phenomenon that has arisen in recent years: the increasing number and growing influence of project groups and independent non-commercial art spaces in Istanbul.
In Istanbul, art project spaces act as important locations for social discourse and discussions about civil society. As a result of increasing internationalization, but also as a consequence of growing independence and burgeoning self-awareness, locations, publishers, magazines and players in the field of contemporary visual arts have established themselves as outstanding elements of social and political discourse in Istanbul.
The activities in Berlin are aimed at initiating a dialogue between these projects and their protagonists offering a presentation platform in Berlin.

Kurye Video Organization is the sole independent, international organization operating in the field of video art in Turkey. Through the concept of "Kurye" (Courier in Turkish), the organization takes the side of the image, which is ever circulating and accessible in our day, and develops a stance against the system of curators and galleries that separates the art world into those who choose and those who are chosen. Kurye Video Organization operates as an archive, meaning that rather than using theme specific works for one event only, it opens its doors to videos of every style and content, archiving videos coming from various countries and organizes events suitable to the works it has in its archive. Currently, the archive includes more than 620 videos by 250 artists from 32 countries and the numbers are increasing by the day. Kurye also works as an agency in representing some of the artists and works in its archive. Kurye organizes international festivals, film screenings, exhibitions, web exhibitions, visual events in live music venues and audio-visual performances.
Kurye Video Organization has been organizing Kargart International Video Festival for the past three years; Kurye will continue organizing its international festival, starting with its forth edition this year, under its own name in Akbank Sanat and Bilgi University Santral Campus. The main aim of Kurye International Video Festival is to promote the rising stars of the contemporary art scene, video art and new media, and to turn Istanbul into an attraction center as an international festival location.
The festival will focus on specific genres every year and also host certain countries and acclaimed international festivals. Extended by the inclusion of numerous side events, the program of the festival this year includes Stelarc as the guest of honor; Mulleras as performance guest; a conference entitled “Body and Technologies” and workshops on Czech animation.
The other plans of Kurye for the years 2009-2010 include: the organization of international video exchange festivals; the organization of periodic seminars on video, new media, performance, archiving and art management; the creation of a public access archive venue; and the development of the Taking Action exhibition coterminous with the Istanbul Biennial in public space.

KURYE, ULUSLARARASI VİDEOLARI İSTANBUL’LA BULUŞTURUYOR
2-12 Haziran tarihlerinde İstanbul’da düzenlenecek Kurye Uluslararası Video Festivali’nin onur konuğu dünyaca ünlü sanatçı Stelarc olacak.
Çağdaş sanatın ve yükselen iletişim mecrası ‘yeni medya’nın vazgeçilmezi videolar, 2 - 12 Haziran tarihleri arasında düzenlenecek Kurye Uluslararası Video Festivali’nde İstanbullu sanatseverlerle buluşacak. Kurye Video Organizasyonu’nun düzenlediği ve uluslararası bir video seçkisinin yanı sıra kapsamlı yan etkinlikleriyle de İstanbul’un dikkatini video sanatı ve yeni medyaya çekmeye hazırlanan festival, Akbank Sanat ve Bilgi Üniversitesi Santral Kampüs’te gerçekleşecek.
Kurye Uluslararası Video Festivali’nin onur konuğu, görüntüleme sistemleri, protez, robotik ve sanal gerçeklik kullanarak işler üreten Avustralyalı ünlü sanatçı Stelarc olacak. İnsan bedeninin sınırlarını keşfetmek amacıyla yola çıkan, insan bedenini ve sanatı, teknoloji ve tıpla birleştirerek gerçekleştirdiği çalışmalarla dünya çapında ses getiren sanatçı Stelarc, 5 Haziran 2009’da Akbank Sanat’ta gerçekleştireceği konuşma ile İstanbullulara yeni bir dünyanın kapılarını aralayacak.
Değerlendirilmeye alınan üç yüzü aşkın video arasından seçilen Kurye Uluslararası Video Festivali Gösterimlerine yirmi iki ülkeden altmış sanatçı katılacak. Festivalde; animasyon ve türleri, müzik videoları, deneysel çalışmalar ve performans videoları başlıkları altında gösterimler sunulacak.
1999 yılında kurulan ve geçen seneler içinde altmış şehre yayılarak en geniş dijital film festivali haline gelen One Dot Zero Festivali’nden üç seçki; yirmi dokuz şehri bünyesinde barındıran Upgrade International’ın bu seneki Venedik Bienali Türk Pavyonu küratörü Başak Şenova küratörlüğünde gerçekleştirilen 2008 seçkisi; Avrupa çapında prestijli mekân ve film festivallerini bir arayan getiren tek eşzamanlı kısa film yarışması Betting on Shorts şeçkisi; uluslararası arenada oldukça geniş bir ağa sahip olan ve Kurye Video Festivali için Essence/Borders başlığı altında hazırlanan International Art Expo gösterimi; Ukrayna’da başlayan genç bir festival Wiz Art Festivali sunulacak gösterimler arasında yer almakta.
Festival ayrıca Çek Cumhuriyeti ve İsveç’ten özel seçkiler sunacaktır. Çek Cumhuriyeti’nin animasyon ve sinema alanında uzmanlaşan prestijli okulu Film School Zlin çalışmaları ve Swedish Film Institut tarafından derlenen İsveç animasyonları ile izleyenler bu iki ülke animasyonlarını mercek altına alacaklar.
Festivalin en renkli konuklarından biri de Cie Mulleras Dans Topluluğu olacak. İnternette dansın ilk temsilcilerinden olan Cie Mulleras Dans Topluluğu’nun dans, müzik, video ve multimedyanın birbirleriyle etkileşimini öneren “İzler: 96 detay” projesi boDig ortaklığıyla gerçekleştirilen gecede İstanbullu sanatseverlerin karşısında olacak.
Animasyon konusunda dünyanın önde gelen ülkesi Çek Cumhuriyeti’nin animasyon ve sinema alanında uzmanlaşan saygın okulu Film School Zlin ögrencileri ve eğitmenleri tarafından verilecek workshoplar ile Garry Hall, Kirk Woolford, Lanfranco Aceti, Tuna Erdem ve Stelarc’ın katılımıyla gerçekleşecek “Beden ve Teknolojiler” başlıklı konferans festivalin en ilgili çekici etkinlikleri arasında yer alacak.
Kurye Uluslararası Video Festivali on bir gün sürecek ve etkinlikler Akbank Sanat, Bilgi Üniversitesi Santral Kampüs ve Talimhane Tiyatrosu’nda gerçekleşecek.

Kurye Video Organizasyonu, sadece video üzerine faaliyet gösteren Türkiye’deki tek bağımsız ve uluslararası organizasyondur. Arşiv sistemiyle çalışan Kurye Video Organizasyonu, aynı zamanda yerel ve uluslararası alanda ajans olarak da çalışmaktadır. KURYE, TO BRING INTERNATIONAL VIDEOS TO ISTANBUL
The guest of honor for Kurye International Video Festival, which will take place between June 2-12, will be world renowned performance artist Stelarc.
Videos, the rising stars of the contemporary art scene and new media alike, will meet art-lovers of Istanbul between June 2-12 at Kurye International Video Festival. Organized by Kurye Video Organization, the festival is preparing to draw Istanbul’s attention to video art and new media with a wide selection international of videos and extensive parallel events. The festival will take place in Akbank Sanat, Bilgi University Santral Campus and Talimhane Theater.
The guest of honor of Kurye International Video Festival will be the renowned Australian artist Stelarc, who utilizes medical monitoring technologies, prosthetics, robotics and virtual reality in his works. Setting out to examine the limits of the human body and gaining renown with his works that bring together human body and art with technology and medicine, Stelarc will open up new horizons for the people of Istanbul with his speech on June 5, 2009 at Akbank Sanat.
From among more than three hundred videos submitted for the festival, Kurye team chose works by 60 artists from 22 countries for screening. These videos, grouped under the main headings of animation, music videos and performance videos, will be screened in seven different sessions (Kurye Animation Selections, Kurye Music Videos and Experimental Works, Kurye Performance Video Selections, Kurye Video Selections) while the festival will also feature selections from numerous international video festivals and organizations.
Animations and music videos from the 2009 selection of the biggest digital film festival of the world, One Dot Zero festival, extending its activities to cover 60 countries since its inception in 1999; 2008 selection of Upgrade International, a network operating in 29 countries, curated by Başak Şenova; 2008 selection of the only synchronized short film festival of the world taking bringing together prestigious film festivals and art venues from Europe and beyond, Betting on Shorts; selection entitled Essence/Borders prepared specifically for Kurye Video Festival by Art Expo; selections from a young festival from Ukraine, Wiz-art Festival are all among the screenings devoted to our global partners.
The festival will also feature special screenings devoted to Czech Republic and Sweden. Works from the renowned Czech animation and cinema institution, Film School Zlin and Swedish animations selected by Swedish Film Institut will give the audience a chance to focus on the animation scene of these two countries.
One of the most colorful guests of the festival will be Cie Mulleras Dance Company. One of the first representatives of dance on internet, Mulleras Dance Company will present its new project synthesizing dance, music, video and multimedia, “Traces 96 Details”. The event will be realized in collaboration with boDig.
One of the leading countries of the world in the field of animation, Czech Republic will be presented by workshops given by instructors and students from the prestigious Film School Zlin. The seminar on “Body, Technology and Art”, which will be realized with the attendance of Gary Hall, Kirk Woolford, Lanfranco Aceti, Tuna Erdem and Stelarc will be yet another highlight of the festival.
Kurye International Video Festival will last 11 days and will take place in Akbank Sanat, Bilgi University Santral Campus and Talimhane Theater.
